background: Galactokinase is a major enzyme for the metabolism of galactose and its deficiency causes congenital cataracts in the adult population. GALK1 sequence shares the greatest level of conservation, 44.5% identity with that from E. coli and 34.6% amino acid identity with the product of the human GALK2 gene. Function: Major enzyme for galactose metabolism. Subunit: Homodimer (Probable). DISEASE: Defects in GALK1 are the cause of galactosemia II (GALCT2) [MIM:230200]. Galactosemia II is an autosomal recessive deficiency characterized by congenital cataracts during infancy and presenile cataracts in the adult population. The cataracts are secondary to accumulation of galactitol in the lenses. Similarity: Belongs to the GHMP kinase family. GalK subfamily.
